Welcome to Class 1 

2024-25

Today we celebrated 'World Book Day'. The children dressed in their comfy clothes ready to snuggle down with a good book. They brought in some very creative book character (hard boiled) eggs from home, took part in a shared read with Class 3 and at the end of the day swapped a book. Another fun day had by all in Class 1!

The sun shone today for our trip to Sandfield Farm near Evesham. The children had great fun learning about farm life and plant/animal life-cycles. They helped plant trees, protect new growing shoots from the elements and after a tasty packed lunch explored the huge Forest School area. A great day was had by all!

When we returned after the school holidays we were left a very mysterious note that something had been delivered to school. We were unsure of what it could be, but after some investigating we found a basket containing a large egg like we had never seen before. Over the next week we read the care instructions on how to look after our egg and the following week it hatched. You will never guess what was inside? ONLY A BABY DRAGON!!!!! We couldn't believe our eyes. After this we became experts and wrote our own dragon fact files. 

On Monday the whole school worked together in their three houses to create a 'Tree of Life' each. The children visited different classrooms to add various parts to their trees and also enjoyed some yoga, stories and art activities. At the end of the day they came back to class create their heart paper chains as part of the collaborative art with the rest of the school. 

For the past two weeks our key text has been 'The Gingerbread Man'. The postman brought a delivery of a gingerbread man in a parcel and he needed our help. As part of our 'Talk 4 Writing' we learnt the story and performed it with actions. We wrote the story using the learnt structure, which then meant we were able to change it to create our own versions. We enjoyed making our own gingerbread men (which luckily didn't escape), and wrote a recipe to teach other people how to make them too! They tasted delicious!

There was much excitement when 10 eggs arrived for the children to watch hatch in the classroom. All 10 chicks hatched; 6 girls and 4 boys were rehomed. We learnt about the life-cycle of a chicken, how they need to be cared for and even gave each one a name. 

Katrina came in to teach us all about what a Christingle was and we each made one with the help of some of our Governors. We learnt about what each item represented and labelled the Christingle in our floor book. 

We have had an exciting couple of weeks in Class 1 after we came in one morning to find some bear footprints in our classroom. After sharing the story we decided we needed to go on a bear hunt to see if we could find the bear. As part of our Literacy learning we wrote a list of what we would need to bring and packed a rucksack. We learnt the story, made up our own actions to go with it and retold the story in the role-play area with masks or in the small world tray with puppets. We also found out why the bear might like to hide in a cave and why they hibernate. The children had great fun making their own little bear caves. At the end of the unit the children went on a bear hunt in the forest school area, negotiating their way through the long grass, river, forest, snowstorm until finally they found the bear hiding in the cave!

We had a snow day and had to make the most of the learning opportunities it provided! We learnt about animals that live in the Arctic and why they are often white. We had great fun bringing snow into the classroom and playing with it. We then asked the question "What happens when snow melts?" We watched the changes which happened over the next few days and talked about how temperature has an impact on this. 

We have been super busy this December in Class 1. Besides our Christmas nativity, the naughty class elf named Mr Pickle Pants changed our role-play area into a Christmas grotto. We also enjoyed our first school trip for our EYFS children to the Everyman Theatre to watch Aladdin. The children learnt about the changes which happen in science when you melt and set chocolate in preparation for our reindeer cake making for the Christmas fayre. They made Christmas trees using natural resources in Forest School and enjoyed the carol concert at our local church. We finished term with a Christmas party; where we made Christmas cards for our families, baked cakes, had a disco, party games and finished with a Christmas film and party food. It was the perfect ending to a fantastic Autumn term. HAVE A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! xx

We were so proud of all the children across EYFS and KS1 in our Christmas nativity. They shone like the real stars they were and for many we can see a future for them on the stage. Thank you to everyone who came to watch, we hope you enjoyed it as much as the children loved performing it to you. 

Tricky Word Writing

Our Year 1 children have been trying so hard this half term to learn their new tricky words. They have spelt all of these from memory. We are so proud of them all!

We would like to thank everyone who joined us for our open afternoon on Monday. The children were able to enjoy lots of Autumn-themed activities with their friends and family. 

In maths this week we have been learning about measures. The children were set the challenge of building a house which would perfectly fit the tiny teddy inside and then one which would fit the bigger mouse inside. We used lots of comparative language when checking each time if we had just the right size! I think you will agree, they look very cosy in their new homes!

We have also been measuring mass using the balance scales. We began by acting as human balance scales. Afterwards Mrs Cotton set us the challenge of finding two items which would make the scales perfectly balance!

We enjoyed a lovely sunny morning at church for our Harvest Festival. Reception made handprint scarecrows and accompanied the Class 4 children when they performed their poem. We read 'The Scarecrow's Wedding' and 'The Lonely Scarecrow' in class, as well as singing 'Dingle, Dangle Scarecrow'. Our Year 1 children joined the rest of KS1 wearing their Autumn crowns for a performance of the 'Autumn Leaves' song. We have been busy the last couple of weeks developing our maths skills and learning new concepts. Year 1 have been learning about place value; ordering numbers, counting on from a given number, matching number words to numerals and working out 1 more/less. Reception have been learning how to sort items in different ways. We've used sorting hoops to sort objects by colour, size, shape, texture, etc.

Autumn Term 2024

We'd like to welcome our new Reception starters and returning Year 1 children to our class. The first week of term has been very busy establishing our new routines, learning the class and carpet rules, casting our book votes, staying for school lunch and most importantly, making new friends!

We will continue sharing photos over the coming weeks of some of the exciting activities we have taken part in....

CLASS 1

2023-24

Today KS1 and Class 3 have completed a workshop about Poly Block Printing. We have also started exploring the 'Cabinet of Curiosity' which will be set up in the library until Thursday.  Please go to 'Events Galley' to see the photos.
